Electrochemical Generation of Hypervalent Bromine(III) Compounds

Joint research on the electrosynthesis of hypervalent bromine by Edgars Suna and Igors Sokolovs (IOS, Laboratory of Advanced Technologies for Organic Synthesis) and scientists from Rostock University, Institute of Chemistry has been published in the top research journal – Angewandte Chemie (IF=12.959).

Authors have presented a straightforward and scalable electrochemical synthesis of chelation-stabilized hypervalent bromine(III) compounds. The electrolysis proceeds at room temperature in an undivided cell under galvanostatic conditions and renders the λ3-bromanes in good yields on the gram scale from bromoarene precursors. Authors have demonstrated that the reactivity of λ3-bromanes can be enhanced by Lewis or Brønsted acid additives as well.
