On 12th September, a delegation from DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) , one of the world’s leading accelerator centres based in Hamburg, Germany, visited LIOS. The purpose of the visit was to introduce the accelerator centre and learn about LIOS’s capabilities and needs, with the aim of establishing future collaboration.
“We would be very interested in student exchange programmes and would be delighted to offer Latvian scientists the opportunity to conduct research using the facilities and infrastructure of our centre,” said Helmut Dosch, Chair of the Board of Directors at DESY and head of the delegation, during the meeting.
DESY is one of Germany’s largest natural science research centres, attracting scientists not only from Germany but from all over the world to conduct research using its large-scale facilities. More than 3,000 guest researchers from more than 40 countries work in DASY annually. Research focuses on four areas: accelerators, photon science, particle physics and astoparticle physics.
“LIOS scientists are particularly interested in collaborating with DESY, a world’s leading research center providing cutting-edge technologies in structural biology to enable our drug discovery initiatives.” said Aigars Jirgensons, Deputy Director for Science at LIOS, who welcomed the delegation.
During the meeting, DESY and LIOS delivered presentations on their respective organisations. This was followed by a tour of the newest LIOS laboratory – the Biotechnology building. Emilio Parisini, the lead researcher of the Biotechnology group, spoke to the visitors about the work and research opportunities in the laboratory, while also showcasing the facilities and equipment.
“Excellent! We were amazed by the technological capabilities at your disposal,” remarked Helmut Dosch at the end of the event.
Both sides expressed hope that this meeting will yield benefits in the nearest future.
