European Marie Curie Innovative Training Network Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position for PhD students is available at Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis.
The European Network for Integrated Training in Dry Eye Disease Drug Development (IT-DED3) aims to deliver multidisciplinary and entrepreneurial researchers trained to develop new therapies for patients suffering from Dry Eye Diseases (DED). DED is a chronic, multifactorial disease of the ocular surface and is a major and increasing healthcare problem due to its high prevalence and economic burden because of the ageing population and frequent computer/tablet/smartphone usage.
- ESRs will be employed by the host organisation for 36 months.

- All researchers will participate in international secondments to other organisations in the IT-DED3 network and in outreach activities targeted at a wide audience.
The main research activities for the ESR will be the process chemistry tasks related to development of synthetic routes suitable for large scale synthesis of lead compounds resulting from serine protease and/or RIPK1 inhibitor discovery programs. This includes route scouting, and optimization of problematic steps to meet the requirements of safe, cost effective and environmentally benign manufacturing process.
ESR will plan and set up chemical experiments both on a laboratory scale, using standard equipment for organic synthesis, and on a kilo-scale, using industrial reactors, filtration, distillation and drying equipment. In addition, ESR will establish process and quality control procedures based on standard analytical methods, including chromatography of various types, NMR, UV and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, etc.
The ESR candidate should have theoretical knowledge in organic chemistry and standard analytical methods including proficiency in mechanisms or organic reactions, organic synthesis methods and methods for structure determination by NMR. ESR should be familiar with standard organic laboratory techniques: setting up reactions at various conditions, extraction, preparative chromatography, crystallization, distillation etc.
- Applicants can be of any nationality.
- Applicants must hold a MSc or equivalent in the field of (bio)medical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences or an equivalent.
- Applicants must have an ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English to a level that is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.
- Applicants must be eligible to enrol on a PhD programme at the host institution (or at a designated university in case the host institution is a non-academic organisation).
- Applicants must have the necessary academic skills and background to make the success of a doctoral degree.
- Previous related research experience will be a distinct advantage.
- Researcher must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Latvia for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.
- ESR must, at the date of recruitment by the host organisation, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
