On September 19-20, 2019 in the centre of Riga the 11th Paul Walden Symposium took place.
The Paul Walden Symposium on Organic Chemistry in Riga has become a tradition. It brings together scientists, scholars, and students from universities, research institutes, and industry from the Baltic States in Paul Walden’s homeland.
The program for Symposium was composed of plenary lectures by distinguished speakers and a poster session by the students.
8 prominent and respected lecturers from 4 countries – Jeffrey W. Bode, P. Andrew Evans, Burkhard Kőnig, Benjamin List, Herbert Mayr, Joseph Moran, Jerome Waser, and Daniel B. Werz gave lectures on their outstanding research in the field of organic chemistry.
The Symposium was opened with a Paul Walden medal presentation. In 2019 the medal for research in the field of organic methodology was awarded to Professor Aigars Jirgensons (Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis) by Professor Māris Turks, Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry (Riga Technical University). Professor Jirgensons later gave a lecture on the carbocation chemistry.
For two best Latvian PhD students there was an opportunity to give oral presentations on their research. This year the presentations were by Anna Lielpētere and Jurijs Ponomarjovs.
The poster prizes for the best posters (2 for PhD, 2 for MSc and 1 for BSc program students) were awarded by the chemical reagent company Bapeks (Dr. chem. Vilnis Liepiņš).
PhD students Sindija Lapčinska and Viktorija Vitkovska, MsC students Andris Jeminejs and Armands Kazia and BSc student Māris Bazulis were the recipients.
The Symposium was organized by the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis and the Riga Technical University.
